December 20, 1951— March 12, 2026
Nicholasville, KY
Kate Flowers Hamilton passed away in her home on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at the age of 74. Born on December 20, 1951, in Burkesville, Kentucky, she was preceded in death by her parents, Perry Gordon Flowers and Noxie Opal Hoots, and her sister, Dimple Geraldine Flowers. She is survived by her husband, Robert Hamilton, who lovingly cared for her over the last 14 years of her life. She was previously married to Reggie Gentry, with whom she had three children: Shane (Lucy) Gentry, Nakada Jennings, and Naresha (Lee) Howard. Her greatest joy was her family, especially her six grandchildren: Jack and Ella Rose Gentry, Riley and Sophie Jennings, and Henry Lee and Caroline Kate Howard.
Kate’s lifelong calling was nursing. At age 12, she created the first “Candy Stripes” nursing program at Cumberland County Hospital. She went on to earn her nursing degree from Midway College and began her career in the OB-GYN department at Good Samaritan Hospital. She later devoted most of her professional life to psychiatric care and caring for the mentally ill, serving at Charter Ridge, Sayre Christian Village, Franklin Manor Nursing Home in Frankfort, Fort Logan Hospital in Stanford, and Spring Haven Nursing Home in Georgetown. In 1992 she served as a health care provider for the Governor’s Task Force for Health Care Reform in Lexington and helped establish the Vietnam Veterans Association in 1985. She was a member of the Women’s League, volunteered regularly with the Nathaniel Mission in the 1980s, and was honored in Who’s Who in the American Nursing Association. She later graduated from Sullivan College as the first student in Kentucky to receive a legal nurse consultant degree and had articles published in the American Nursing Association. She was known professionally as Wilma Kate Flowers, R.N.C., L.N.C.
A woman of deep faith, Kate was a longtime member of Southland Christian Church and lived with gratitude for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She faced serious health challenges with courage, including breast cancer in 2016, during which she made handmade bookmarks to offer encouragement and comfort to fellow patients. Even while battling the lung disease that ultimately took her life, she remained devoted to her family and found joy in simple pleasures. She loved coloring, reading her Bible daily, cross-stitching, quilting, and sewing Christmas ornaments. An avid University of Kentucky basketball fan, she followed every game, memorized player statistics, and collected team records each season.
Kate will be remembered as a loving mother, devoted wife, and cherished grandmother whose life was defined by compassion, strength, and selfless service to others. Her warm spirit, gentle empathy, and ability to make people feel seen and cared for left a lasting impact on her family, her patients, and all who knew her. She often said she felt like the luckiest woman in the world to be married to Robert and was deeply grateful for his devoted care. Her legacy of love, faith, and perseverance continues through the family she cherished and the many lives she touched.
