Karla Garde Henke

December 19, 1983 March 6, 2026

Rio Rancho, NM

Karla Garde Henke, 42, passed peacefully on the evening of March 6 in the arms of her brother Kyle. She had been lovingly cared for in the ICU at Sandoval Regional Medical Center following complications from medically unresponsive viral pneumonia and congestive heart failure. Born with congenital heart defects common in children with Down syndrome, Karla underwent surgery at nine months and again at three and a half years old. She fought through those early challenges and went on to bless her family with more than four decades of unconditional love.

Born on December 19, 1983, in Farmington, New Mexico, to Susan Garde and Steven Henke, Karla attended Piedra Vista High School and graduated in 2006. She was known for her remarkable sensitivity to others’ feelings, her gentle spirit, and her consistent kindness. Those close to her could always count on a heartfelt rendition of “Happy Birthday” if she had their special date stored in her phone.

Karla found joy in swimming, bowling, horseback riding, country music, concerts, performing, dancing, and volunteering whenever she had the chance. She cherished her frequent visits to Disneyland, where she would dance with the princesses in matching costumes, and she delighted in caring for her nieces, Sadie and Shelby. Multiple caregivers over the years welcomed her into their homes and hearts, treating her like family and ensuring she could participate fully in the activities she loved. She also took part in events with the New Mexico Special Olympics and the Rio Grande Down Syndrome Network.

Karla is survived by her mother, Susan Garde; her father, Steve Henke; her sister, Kayci Burns (Scott); her brother, Kyle Henke (Makenna); and her nieces, Sadie and Shelby. She was preceded in death by her grandfather Alfonso (AJ) Garde, grandfather Marvin Henke, grandmother Shirley Huebert, and uncle Jimmy Jenkins. Her life was filled with love, and the memory of her boundless joy and kindness remains a lasting gift to all who knew her.
