May 15, 1955— March 4, 2026
Roseau, MN
Karen Rochelle Halverson, 70, of Roseau, Minnesota, passed away on March 4, 2026, at LifeCare Roseau Manor.
Born on May 15, 1955, in Montevideo, Minnesota, Karen was the third of four children born to Raymond and Kathleen Eliason. She spent her early years in Milan, where she was baptized and confirmed at Kviteseid Lutheran Church. The family later lived briefly in Jackson before settling in Roseau for her senior year of high school. It was there that she formed lifelong friendships, met her future husband, and built her life.
After graduating from Roseau High School in 1973, Karen pursued higher education at Northland Technical College in Thief River Falls and later earned a bachelor’s degree in social work from Minnesota State University in Moorhead. Her career in social work began in Red Lake County and continued with Roseau County before she found her true calling at LifeCare Roseau Manor, where she devoted more than 26 years to caring for residents with compassion and dedication.
Karen married Gary Halverson on April 6, 1985, after he persistently pursued her. Together they raised three children and shared countless road trips, holiday gatherings, and lively game nights. She had a deep love for travel, music, and concerts, and was known for her remarkable memory, exceptional trivia skills, dry sense of humor, and quiet enjoyment of reading, coffee with friends, and successful shopping trips. Above all, she was a devoted mother who supported her children’s dreams and a cherished grandmother who created treasured memories reading books with her grandchildren.
Karen is survived by her children, Amanda (Randy) Johnson of West Fargo, North Dakota, Andy (Hannah Pearson) Halverson and Alex Halverson of Roseau, Minnesota; grandchildren Ava, Brayden, and Ella Johnson; siblings Bruce Eliason, Bonnie (Don) Nelson, and Craig (Sandy) Eliason; and sister-in-law Nancy (Peter) Thiessen, along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Gary, her parents Raymond and Kathleen Eliason, and her in-laws Gordon and Norma Halverson.
