August 2, 1958— March 12, 2026
Rochester, NY
Karen Dorothy Pappas of Rochester, New York, passed away on March 12, 2026 at the age of 67 following a courageous seven-year battle with brain cancer. Born on August 2, 1958 in Oregon, Ohio to Pando and Maria Pappas, she remained deeply rooted in her Greek heritage throughout her life.
For forty years, Karen was a devoted wife to her husband, James Pappas, and a loving mother to their three sons, James (Stephanie), Christopher, and Zachary. They were the center of her world, and she was their greatest champion and source of strength. Together with her family, she was a founder and active member of Holy Spirit Greek Orthodox Church, where she drew on her musical background to direct the choir and establish many of the church’s music and cultural programs. Her faith, heritage, quick wit, and love of singing, dancing, and hosting family gatherings left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Pando Pappas and Maria VanKlingeren Pappas. She is survived by her husband, James; her sons and their families, including grandchildren Parker and Lucy; her sister, Constance (Steve); her brothers, Michael (Barb) and Jeff (Jacqueline); and many nieces, nephews, and cherished friends from Holy Spirit Greek Orthodox Church. The family is especially grateful for the devoted care provided by her cousins Kathy Bailey, Patty Sarantis, and Jane Mickles, her dear friend Betsy Palis, and her caregiver Anja during the final years and months of her life.
