Karen Dale Templeton Gibson
June 16, 1944— March 8, 2026
Cullen, VA
Karen Dale Templeton Gibson, 81, of Cullen, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at her home. Born at home in Abilene, Virginia, on June 16, 1944, she was the daughter of Hattie Arrington Templeton and Noah Jackson Templeton. Karen grew up on the family farm in Charlotte County as the third of six children. From her earliest years, she sang, and at age 12 she began piano lessons with Miss Bessie Daniel, discovering the language of her soul through music. She attended Longwood College, where she majored in music education with a concentration in voice, later learning to play the organ and cello. She earned her Master’s in Education from Longwood University.
At the age of 15, Karen dedicated her life to full-time Christian service. She honored that commitment for six decades by leading choirs in local churches, always choosing music that expressed love and praise to God. She also taught music in the Charlotte, Appomattox, and Prince Edward County schools, operated a Yamaha music school, and gave private lessons in her home. Through her patient and passionate instruction, many generations of children learned to sing and play instruments.
Karen is survived by her husband, Henry Newton Gibson; her son, Nolan Newell Gibson (Crystal); her daughter, Camille Sams Gibson Rabon (Sam); grandchildren Hunter and Jacob Gibson and Seth, Caleb, and Isaac Rabon; her sisters, Hazel Harrison, Linda McClung, Wanda Stewart, and Marcia Templeton; and her sister-in-law, Alice Templeton. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Murray Templeton.
Together with Henry, she helped tend their farm, ran a catering business, and opened a beloved local restaurant. Her greatest passions were her husband and children, whom she loved fiercely. When her grandsons arrived, she delighted in them as Granny K, filling their days with love, food, and gentle lessons. Her home and yard reflected the things she cherished most—family, music, and flowers—overflowing with plants, instruments of every kind, toys, puzzles, and artwork. Even on her last lucid day, she was surrounded by her dulcimer group, who came faithfully to play for her.
