Justin Ransom "Judd" Swift

Justin Ransom "Judd" Swift

May 11, 1945 March 9, 2026

Little Washington, VA

Justin “Judd” Swift died peacefully on March 9, 2026, after a brief illness, surrounded by his family. A larger-than-life figure with a commanding presence, he recited Shakespeare and Sophocles and sang arias in the halls of the White House, the Department of Energy, at family dinners, and before any audience that would listen. He had a special gift for terrible puns and an uncommon talent for putting people at ease while they tackled difficult tasks. This ability served him well through distinguished careers in the hotel industry, in service to three presidents, and in building a successful consulting practice. His final role was as CEO of Synfuels Americas, a position he held until his death.

Judd was a natural storyteller who collected and shared memorable tales, many involving prominent figures from politics and public life. In 2024 he published My Presidential Life, a book that captured his experiences during campaigns and administrations at the White House.

Born Justin Swift on May 11, 1945, in New York City, he was a proud member of the Noyes family of the Evening Star newspaper. Though born out of state, he always considered himself a fifth-generation Washingtonian. He grew up on Reno Road in Washington, DC, spent part of his youth in the Netherlands, and attended Rodney School in Nottinghamshire, UK, where he was known as the misbehaving American. In later years he found great happiness living in Little Washington, Virginia. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Gail Swift, his brothers Ted, Bill, and Chris, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
