Julia Mary Schwind Vecera
December 25, 1932— March 6, 2026
Fort Worth, TX
Julia Mary Schwind Vecera, beloved wife, mother, and woman of deep faith, passed away on March 6, 2026, in Fort Worth, Texas, at the age of ninety-three, surrounded by her children and family.
Born on December 25, 1932, in Breckenridge, Texas, to Joseph Francis and Mary Rose Schwind, Julia was one of nine children who came of age during the Great Depression and World War II. These early years instilled in her a lifelong practice of resourcefulness, gratitude, and prayer that guided every chapter of her life.
After earning her degree as a Registered Nurse from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing, Julia served in the obstetrics department at St. Joseph and later in pediatrics at Cook Children’s Hospital. In later years she worked as a secretary at St. Bartholomew and St. Paul Catholic Churches and volunteered at Mother and Unborn Baby Care, where her compassion for young mothers and her steadfast support of the unborn found full expression.
Above all, Julia found her greatest joy as wife and mother. Married to Jimmy Alphonse Vecera for sixty-two years, she and Jim created a home rich in laughter, hard work, tradition, and faith. Together they traveled to every state and across Europe, yet Julia’s favorite place remained the mountains of Colorado, where she felt closest to God. In retirement they volunteered at church, delivered food to those in need, and gave generously to the poor, remaining ardent supporters of the parishes and schools in the Catholic Diocese of Fort Worth.
Julia and Jim were blessed with five daughters and two sons. She taught them the value of diligence, cooperation, service, and gratitude through everyday tasks—picking blackberries, cleaning house, sewing, and painting—while filling their lives with simple gifts such as warm bread, handcrafted pickles, rescued plants, and unwavering care. Her Catholic faith served as the steady compass of her life; she taught her children to pray daily and modeled the conviction that every human being deserves dignity. This legacy of faith, humility, and love remains her enduring gift to all who knew her.
She is survived by her children, Anne Fernandez and husband Fred, Jimmy Vecera Jr. and wife Julie, Nancy Alonso and husband Mike, Joseph Vecera and wife Lynnette, Teresa Finn and husband Tom, Mary Burns and husband Lonnie, and Jeanne Murphy and husband John; her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings Catherine Meyer, Francis Schwind, Patricia Rose, and Marian Stillman; and scores of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends who will miss her dearly.
Julia was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Mary Rose Schwind; her husband, Jimmy Alphonse Vecera; her brothers Joseph, Leonard, and Edward Schwind; and her sister Caroline Leonard.
