Judith Kim Hassell

April 3, 1939 March 8, 2026

Heber City, UT

Judy Hassell passed away peacefully on the morning of March 8, 2026, surrounded by family and hospice staff in Heber City, Utah. Born on April 3, 1939, in Salt Lake City to Alfred Ruben Nelson and Erna Goulding, she was raised in Anaheim, California, with her older brother Rod and younger sister Patricia after her mother married Everett Lawrence Murphy. A graduate of Anaheim Union High School, Judy worked at Disneyland’s Chicken of the Sea restaurant when it first opened, played piano, and sang in the Trouveres Choir. She later raised her children across Southern California, Southern Oregon, and Santa Fe, New Mexico, while working in administrative and finance roles to provide stability through times of change.

In November 1979, Judy married Clayton R. Hassell in Ashland, Oregon, and their marriage was solemnized the following year in the Oakland Temple. Together they served two missions in the Philippines in 1996–1997 and 2007, and later as ordinance workers in the Ogden Temple in 2016. Deeply devoted to her faith, Judy found her greatest purpose in making others feel loved and valued. She ministered through quiet acts of service, consistent encouragement, and genuine interest in the lives of those around her. An avid reader of history and gospel doctrine, she studied the scriptures diligently, strengthening her own testimony and using it to uplift family and friends. Though she was not able to complete a traditional college degree, she pursued learning throughout her life and encouraged her children and grandchildren to value education.

Judy loved to travel, cook, and explore new cultures, enjoying visits to Germany, Jamaica, Peru, and the Philippines. She was an advocate for social causes and played a key role in preserving a historic covered bridge in Eagle Point, Oregon. Above all, she cherished her eternal companion, Clayton, who passed just fourteen months before her, and looked forward to their reunion. She remained close to her children, their spouses, and grandchildren, remembering birthdays and special occasions, listening attentively, and nurturing their interest in family history through her passion for genealogy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Erna and Everett Murphy; brothers Gerald Dan Nelson and Rodney Gene Nelson; sister Patricia Springer; daughters Sharon Hassell, Sheila Hassell Jewkes, and Jennifer Lynn Addington; sons Clayton Ray Hassell and John Manuel Hassell; grandson Charles Everett Dodson Hays; and great-grandson Phoenix Jermain. Judy is survived by her brother-in-law Ray Springer; sons Chris Addington (Terry), Joe Addington, Philip Addington (Sabrina), Diego Maestas, Brad Hassell, and James Hassell; daughters Andrea Dabier (Ali), Susan Addington, Cynthia Hassell, Melanie Terrile, and Sheryl Hassell Perkins; twenty grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
