April 6, 1928— March 7, 2026
New York, NY
Juanita Vega, born Juana Herenia Castro Seda Vega on April 6, 1928, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, in New York at the age of 97. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jesus Vega.
Raised in Luquillo, Puerto Rico, by her adopted parents Simeon (Moncho) and Genara (Jean) Gabino alongside her adopted siblings Florita, Feliciano, and Hector Manuel, Juanita grew up near the beach, an experience that nurtured her adventurous spirit and provided stories she delighted in sharing with her family throughout her life. After graduating from high school, she moved to New York City in 1950, settling in Brooklyn where she lived with friends while working and establishing her independence. There she met the love of her life, Jesus Vega, and they married on November 22, 1952. Together they built a home and raised three sons.
A resilient and strong-willed woman, Juanita devoted herself to her family, raising her sons with love, discipline, and determination that helped prepare them for life in New York City. She took great joy in family gatherings and holidays, spending hours cooking and preparing her home so loved ones could come together in celebration. In her later years, she found simple pleasures in watching her favorite novelas and enjoying chocolates.
Juanita is survived by her three sons, Jesus Vega Jr., Edwin Vega, and Jose Vega; her two granddaughters, Arielle Melissa Vega and Rosalina Sofia Vega; and extended family and loved ones who will cherish her memory and the legacy of strength and devotion she leaves behind.
