Juan D. Gaia M.D.

Juan D. Gaia M.D.

July 13, 1944 March 5, 2026

Wilkes-Barre, PA

Juan D. Gaia, M.D., passed away on March 5, 2026. Born on July 13, 1944, in the Malbec wine region of Mendoza, Argentina, he grew up with a deep appreciation for learning and service that would define his life.

As a boy, Juan traveled miles by public bus to attend an English language academy, demonstrating early academic promise. He completed his secondary studies ahead of schedule and trained in winemaking at Liceo Agricola Y Enologico Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, becoming a certified oenologist. Though a successful career in the wine industry awaited him, the influence of his family doctor inspired him to pursue medicine instead. He earned his medical degree from Universidad Nacional de Cuyo and went on to become a board-certified diagnostic radiologist in Pennsylvania, where he practiced for more than 50 years, primarily in the Wyoming Valley.

Dr. Gaia was known for his expertise as a radiologist, his leadership, and his unwavering compassion. He served as president of the Luzerne County Medical Society in 1991 and 1992, directed ultrasound departments at Misericordia University and Lackawanna College, and taught radiology at TCMC. He took particular pride in Valley Open MRI & Diagnostic Center in Kingston. Colleagues and staff remembered his high standards of care and the respectful, supportive environment he fostered. Beyond medicine, he belonged to many professional organizations and quietly supported numerous nonprofit causes.

Juan was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He loved swimming, reading, fly fishing, and vintage cars. He and his wife, Betty, traveled the world together, and he cherished deep conversations and meaningful connections with others. He guided his children with patience, common-sense wisdom, and kindness. Preceded in death by his parents, Juan G. and Ofelia Gaia, he is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Betty Saba; children Ryan, Joshua, Andrew, and Benjamin (Allison); stepchildren Gina, Amy (Paul), and Gary (Christine); grandchildren Kai, Aiden, Erisun, Magnolia, Luca, and Penny; and his sister, Ofelia Gaia of Mendoza, Argentina.
