December 13, 1938— March 5, 2026
Pittsburgh, PA
Joseph T. Hall, a loving and devoted father whose life reflected strength, discipline, and unwavering love, entered eternal rest on March 5, 2026, surrounded by his loving family in the home he built with them.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on December 13, 1938, Joseph lost his mother, Ella Bailey-Hall, to pneumonia as a toddler. He was lovingly raised by his Aunt Elmira and her husband General Allen, whom he affectionately called “Mom.” A faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church from his youth, Joseph was baptized there and remained active in its activities. After the loss of his father and Uncle General, he was sent to the Piney Woods Country Life School in rural Rankin County, Mississippi, where he attended middle school through high school. The historic boarding school instilled in him the values of hard work, discipline, and integrity that defined the rest of his life.
Following graduation from Piney Woods, Joseph attended Tuskegee University for two and a half years before returning to Pittsburgh. He was drafted into the U.S. Army, marrying the love of his life, Patricia L. Milton, just before his service from 1962 to 1964. After his honorable discharge, he worked shoveling coal for Duquesne Light while attending the University of Pittsburgh in the evenings, eventually earning a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. He advanced through senior engineering roles over 36 dedicated years before retiring.
One of Joseph’s proudest accomplishments was building the family home he had long dreamed of, working alongside his wife, children, and extended family for nearly three years—four hours each night and twelve hours on weekends, even through harsh Pittsburgh winters. That home became the heart of their family, where he and Patricia raised six children and fostered three more after his brother’s sudden passing. In later years, Joseph discovered a deep love for tennis, teaching the game to his children and grandchildren and spending countless hours on the court encouraging them or watching them compete with pride.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Ella Bailey-Hall; Elmira and General Allen; his siblings Raymond Hall, Samuel Hall, Elmira Stewart, and Loretta Grant; his beloved wife, Patricia L. Hall; and his daughter, June Hall Roberson. He is survived by his children Skyland Joycelyn Nance (Alan), Martie M. Hall (Rhonda), Louise E. Johnson (Jimmy), Martha A. Hall, and Latricia J. Hall; his siblings Esther Hall, William Hall (Delores), Claudia Burton, Gail Lewis (Robert), and Jo Anna Martin (Robert); and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. His legacy endures in the lives he shaped through his example of strength, discipline, and unconditional love.
