Joseph S. Farkas, 92, born November 16, 1933, in Budapest, Hungary, died peacefully on March 10, 2026, surrounded by his family.
Joe immigrated from Hungary in 1957 and settled in Poughkeepsie, New York. There he began working at Hudson River Psychiatric Hospital, where he learned English and met his future wife, Gizella Vescey, who had also come from Hungary. They married on March 9, 1958, in Poughkeepsie, and shared a loving marriage of nearly 68 years.
A skilled welder, Joe first ran his own welding company before working at New York Trap Rock until his retirement in 1995. He took greatest joy in his role as “Poppy” to his three granddaughters, Lindsay Farkas and husband Chris Hearn of Sanford, North Carolina, Kaylee Farkas of Wendell, North Carolina, and Allisyn Farkas of Knightdale, North Carolina, of whom he was enormously proud. He is also survived by his son, Joseph and wife Elizabeth of Wendell, North Carolina, and daughter Deborah Wooden and husband Ernest of Red Hook, New York, as well as his wife Gizella, who remains at home.
Joe loved hunting, fishing, cooking, sports, gardening, NASCAR races, wrestling, and classic movies. He had a remarkable memory for dates and numbers, cherished animals of all kinds, and was a longtime member of the Crum Elbow Gun Club in Hyde Park and the Shamrock Association in Poughkeepsie. His warm spirit and the countless memories he created will live on in the hearts of the family who adored him.
