Joseph R. Straka

Joseph Robert Straka, born June 25, 1936, in Stickney, Illinois, passed away on March 12, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. A true patriot, Joe served three years in the United States Army after high school. He later earned a degree from DeVry Technical Institute and enjoyed a successful 30-year career with Unisys, formerly Burroughs, where his determination, problem-solving skills, and integrity earned him the position of Logistics Manager.

In 1969, Joe married the love of his life, Sherry Polabel. They shared 36 years of marriage until her passing in 2005. Together they raised two daughters who remained the center of his world. He is survived by daughters Jill Hayes (Tim) and Robin Barrett (Tony), grandchildren Carter, Nicole, and Leah, and nieces Reggie Sorenson (Wayne) and Wendy Walczak.

Joe’s greatest joy was watching his grandchildren grow and succeed. He proudly attended every track, football, and lacrosse game for Carter, cheered at nearly all of Nicole’s competitive dance events across hip hop, lyrical, jazz, and ballet, and followed Leah’s swimming career with deep enthusiasm, attending meets in person or watching online as she competed on national and international stages with USA Swimming.

At heart, Joe cherished simple pleasures—Friday nights with beer and pizza, Saturday afternoon movies with popcorn, and time spent outdoors. He took great pride in caring for his lawn, mowing, trimming trees, and tending to every detail. Above all, he was a devoted father, loving Papa, kind and generous soul, and faithful friend who was always ready to help those he loved. He will be deeply missed and will live on through all whose lives he touched.
