Joseph Montalvo ObituaryObituary published on Legacy.com by Honquest Family Funeral Home with Crematory - Loves Park on Mar. 6, 2026.Joseph "Joe" Paul Montalvo had a natural curiosity about the world and the people in it-something anyone who ever had a conversation with him quickly discovered. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Joe spent much of his childhood growing up in Detroit, Michigan and Rockford, Illinois-places that helped shape the hardworking and inquisitive person he became. It was in Rockford that Joe met his wife, Marie, at the YMCA, beginning a partnership built on love, respect, and a shared dedication to their daughters. Together they worked hard to build a better life for their family, always focused on creating more opportunities for future generations.Joe spent much of his career working at Chrysler, where he built lasting friendships. But even beyond his years there, Joe was never someone who could sit still. His mind was always moving. He could often be found researching the stock market, studying real estate, or exploring new business opportunities. He approached life as a perpetual learner and believed deeply that everyone had something to teach you, which is why he struck up conversations with just about everyone he met. That curiosity extended to his fascination with businesses and how they operated-something that showed up most famously in his love for Costco. Anyone who knew Joe knew about it. He would stop by multiple times a week just to walk through the store, observe how things were running, and chat with employees he had gotten to know over time. It became such a well known part of his personality that his family threw him a surprise party for his 65th birthday there last year.Joe also had an entrepreneurial spirit and proudly served as the unofficial "President of Advertisement" for Clean Choice, the cleaning business run by his wife, Marie. Whether he was handing out pens to anyone who would take one or spending summers going door to door passing out flyers with his daughter Bianca, he was always eager to find new ways to promote her business.Travel was another great joy in Joe's life. Some of his favorite memories were the annual spring break trips he took with his girls, whether they were exploring a new state or visiting one of his favorite places in the world-Disney World. He admired what Walt Disney built so much that he and his daughter Kiana made several trips there together while she was in high school. Joe's sense of adventure extended far beyond the United States. One of his favorite recent trips took him all the way to Munich, Germany to see Adele in concert for the weekend with his family.Closer to home, Joe found joy in everyday routines and small moments. He was the undisputed king of step challenges-friends and family knew that if steps were being counted, Joe intended to be at the top of the leaderboard, even if that meant going for a walk in the middle of the night to stay ahead. He also held a special place in his heart for the family dog, KayJay. Their nightly routine often included Joe sneaking him popcorn, hoping Marie wouldn't notice.Within his family, Joe was often the peacemaker. When tensions rose, he was known for calmly reminding everyone to "put the guns away," a phrase that never failed to bring laughter. One of Joe's most defining traits was his generosity. He was a natural gift-giver who never arrived anywhere empty-handed. Whether it was a Costco find, a gift card, or a carefully chosen item he thought someone might need, he took joy in finding ways to make people feel cared for and seen. But more than any gift he could give, Joe's greatest strength was his genuine interest in people. He took the time to get to know others, asking thoughtful questions and remembering the small details. At family cookouts, you could always find him sitting at a table deep in conversation with someone-wanting updates on their life, asking about their goals, and thinking about ways he could support them. Those who knew Joe will remember a man who was endlessly curious about the world around him-someone who loved to learn, explore, and connect with people. He is survived by his wife, Marie Franco-Montalvo; his daughters, Bianca (Zach) Montalvo, Kiana (Riley) Montalvo, Irma Kayser; siblings, Lynda Ruefer, Ruth Hood, Cecil (Janice) Montoya, Michael (Cynthia) Montoya, Ricardo (Connie) Montalvo, Anthony (Ritajean) Montalvo.
