Joseph P. McDevitt of Somers Point, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2026, at the age of 84. Born to James and Gladys on March 13, 1941, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Joseph was predeceased by his loving wife Kathleen, to whom he was married for 49 wonderful years. He is survived by his daughters, Heather McDevitt of Cherry Hill and Meredith of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and by his sister, Catherine “Kay” McDonald of Marlton, New Jersey. He was predeceased by his siblings, William McDevitt, Gladys McDevitt, Albert McDevitt, John “Jack” McDevitt, Dorothy Parisi, Ruth Hoffman, and James McDevitt.
Joseph spent many cherished childhood summers at the family home in Avalon, where he developed a lifelong passion for fishing and boating. A graduate of North Catholic High School in 1959, he was an intelligent and resourceful man with a wide range of practical skills. As a young adult, he owned and operated a successful painting and paperhanging business before becoming owner and captain of the Ocean Trophy charter fishing boat, along with other business ventures. A devoted Phillies and Eagles fan, he also enjoyed Irish dancing as a member of the Cara Irish Society and later formed many new friendships through the Somers Point VFW and American Legion Auxiliary.
Joseph was a kind and humble man with a playful spirit who loved to joke with friends and family. He gave as good as he got, always ready with a smile and a quick wit. He will be remembered for his welcoming heart, his good-natured attitude, his unforgettable dad jokes, and the deep love he held for those closest to him.
