July 9, 1967— March 9, 2026
Aberdeen, SD
Joseph Brian Gisi, known to all as Joe, was born on July 9, 1967, in Aberdeen, South Dakota, to Paul and Margaret (Oe) Gisi. Raised in Aberdeen alongside his seven siblings, he graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1985. In 1989, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving in Hawaii and completing overseas tours in Thailand and Japan, where he trained alongside local troops and formed many lasting memories. He was honorably discharged in 1991 and returned to his hometown.
Joe built a long career in sales, working with A-1 Beverage, Johnson Brothers Famous Brands, Hub City Inc., 3M, and Corporate Image Group. His natural charisma and genuine friendliness helped him form deep, enduring relationships with clients who often became close friends. He was also well known in the community for his part-time work at Sooper Stop alongside his brother and sister-in-law, where he enjoyed visiting with customers and friends. While at Hub City, he met the love of his life, Julie Janisch. They shared more than 21 wonderful years together before marrying on August 22, 2025, making their home in Aberdeen and creating cherished memories with Julie’s children, Jacob and Jared Janisch.
A true social butterfly, Joe loved being around people. He was a devoted fan of the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins, an avid golfer, and enjoyed spending time with friends at Schwan’s Recreation. He had a deep appreciation for classic 1980s rock music and brought a fun-loving spirit and zest for life to every gathering. Even during his courageous battle with cancer, he and Julie were surrounded by the constant support of friends and loved ones who visited to share stories and spend time together. Joe’s laughter, friendship, and enthusiasm touched everyone who knew him.
Joe passed away peacefully at his home in Aberdeen on March 9, 2026, at the age of 58. He is survived by his wife, Julie Janisch of Aberdeen; stepsons Jacob (Brittney) Janisch and their daughter Grace of Erie, Colorado, and Jared Janisch of Aberdeen; siblings Laura (Lee) Frankenberger, Tom (Toni) Gisi, Dianna Gisi, Paul (Shawna) Gisi, and Lynette Gisi; his father-in-law and mother-in-law LeRoy and Marlene Nelson; brothers-in-law Lee Nelson and Lynn Nelson; many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Margaret Gisi, and siblings Jim Gisi and Mary Lindquist.
