Joseph Baranek ObituaryObituary published on Legacy.com by Christler Funeral Home Prudenville Chapel on Mar. 17, 2026.Joseph Bernard Baranek, 82, of Houghton Lake passed away on Friday March 6, 2026 at home with his loving family by his side.Joseph was born on October 29, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois to Joseph and Katherine (Markotan) Baranek. Joseph grew up in the Chicago area where he graduated from Chicago Vocational High School. He then went on to receive his associates degree in electronics. Joseph served as a SP4 in the Army during the Vietnam War. He worked for Illinois Bell Telephone for many years before his retirement. He moved from the Chicago area to Houghton Lake in 2013. Joseph was a member of the American Legion and served as Chaplin. Growing up Joseph developed a love of music. He played bass, guitar, trumpet, and piano. Joseph belonged to a band following high school in the Chicago area. In his retirement in Houghon Lake he also loved spending time with his cat, Debbie.Surviving Mr. Baranek are his daughter, Juliet Baranek; son, Phillip(Amy) Baranek; two grandsons, Hayden and Carter; brother, Tony (Jan) Baranek; two sisters, Rose Ann Baranek, and Ann Elizabeth Baranek. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marylou; and brother, John.At the request of Mr. Baranek there will be no services at this time. Memorial contributions in memory of Joseph are asked to be directed to the American Legion or the ASPCA. Christler Funeral Home, Prudenville Chapel is serving the family.
