John William "J.W." Barts, Jr.
Charlotte, NC
John William “J.W.” Barts, Jr. passed away on March 9, 2026 at the age of 87. The son of John and Marion Barts of Yanceyville, North Carolina, he grew up in Yanceyville, attended Yanceyville High School, and went on to earn both his undergraduate and dental degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed his oral surgery training at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.
While at Chapel Hill, J.W. met Frances Moseley, the love of his life. They married in May 1963. After serving in the U.S. Navy Reserve and finishing his training, the couple settled in Charlotte in 1968, where he joined the practice that became Drs. Austin, Porter and Barts. He retired in 2010 and devoted his time to golf, travel with Frances, and especially his grandchildren.
J.W. was a longtime member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church and the Rhodes-Johnston-Boyce Sunday School Class. He belonged to the Charlotte Dental Society, the Southeastern Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Sportsman’s Club, and was a fifty-year member of Myers Park Country Club. To his family he was known as “Pops,” a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose humor, warmth, and steady love were felt by everyone around him. He cherished time outdoors gardening or on the golf course, cheered for his beloved Tar Heels and Carolina Panthers, and took special joy in supporting his grandchildren exactly as they were, always their biggest champion.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Frances Moseley Barts; daughters Ainslie Barts Wall (Ed) and Courtney “Buffy” Barts Follak, all of Charlotte; grandchildren Edward Wall (Grayson) of Atlanta, John William Wall of Franklin, Tennessee, Morgan Follak of Nashville, Tennessee, Mackenzie Follak of Charleston, South Carolina, and Marshall Follak of Charlotte; his sister Juanita Barts Fuquay of Greensboro, North Carolina; sisters-in-law Joy Moseley Neigoot of Mentor, Ohio and Ann Moseley Livaudais (Frank) of The Woodlands, Texas; many beloved nieces and nephews; and his faithful companion, Tiger.
