King & Queen Courthouse, VA
John Wayne “Rabbit” South, 85, of King & Queen County, passed away on March 9, 2026. Born on August 15, 1940, to the late John T. and Lillian C. South, he was a lifelong resident of the area and a man known for his steadfast character and quiet dedication.
Wayne retired from the telephone company of Gloucester after 31 years, never missing a single day of work. He was a longtime member of Olivet Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as both trustee and deacon. He also gave more than 40 years of service to the Central King & Queen Fire Department, including many years as chief. In addition, he served as president of the Little Plymouth Hunt Club for over 40 years, cherishing the days spent hunting and sharing fellowship with his hunting companions.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Margaret C. South; his sister, Marlene S. Vannoy; and brothers-in-law, William B. Carlton and James C. Gresham. The family is deeply grateful for the care provided by Barbara Nworgu and for all those who visited and supported him.
