John Valerio ObituaryObituary published on Legacy.com by Volk Leber Funeral Home - Oradell on Mar. 6, 2026.John Valerio passed away on March 6, 2026, at the age of 93, leaving behind a legacy of service, strength, and love for his family and community.Born on July 7, 1932, in Italy, John immigrated to the United States as a young man - and almost immediately answered his new country's call to service, joining the United States Army and serving with the 2nd Infantry Division during the Korean War. It was a remarkable act of devotion to a nation he had barely had the chance to call home.When he returned, John built his life in the New York area, dedicating his career to keeping others safe as a New York City police officer. He later settled in Township of Washington, New Jersey, where he served with great pride as Commander of VFW Post 6192 - remaining committed to his fellow veterans until the end.But above all, John was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jean; his sons Stephen (Jennifer) and Michael; and his grandchildren Celeste, Nick, Aiden, and Olivia, who will carry his spirit with them always.A viewing will be at Volk Leber Funeral Home, 268 Kinderkamack Road in Oradell from 1-5 PM on Sunday, March 8. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Andrew's Roman Catholic Church at 10:30 AM, on Monday, March 9 with burial to follow at George Washington Memorial Park.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
