June 30, 1941— February 22, 2026
New York, NY
John “Larry” Tate Jr., 84, of New York, passed away on February 22, 2026, after battling a lengthy illness. Born in Dallas County, Alabama, on June 30, 1941, he grew up with a strong sense of independence and determination that shaped the rest of his life. He graduated from Dallas County Training School with the class of 1958.
He proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1963 to 1967 at Dover Air Force Base in Dover, Delaware. During his service, John earned the National Defense Service Medal for his actions in the Vietnam War, the Air Force Marksmanship Ribbon as an Expert in small arms marksmanship, and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal in recognition of his exemplary conduct.
John was a self taught entrepreneur who built and operated several retail businesses over the years. He had a natural gift for connecting with people, and as he traveled across the country, he welcomed every opportunity to meet someone new. Whether offering advice, sharing a story, or simply listening, he often took time to teach, motivate, and encourage family and friends on business and life matters. Those who knew him well remember his strong presence, intelligence, and willingness to help others find their own path.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Catherine Matthew née Tate and George Higgins; his wife, Mamie Tate née Goldsberry, and grandson, Ronald Brown Jr.
John is survived by the children he loved: Michele Tate, Cheryl Ross (late Samuel Jr.), Renell O’Neal (Angela), and Kristin Barnes. His family also includes his 14 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. He is further survived by his siblings, Roxie Jackson and George Higgins Jr., along with a host of relatives and friends.
John’s life reflects a legacy of service, hard work, and dedication, and he will be remembered with fondness by all who knew him.
A parting message in his own words: “remember patience, determination, and peace are companions that serve man during his journey in life. Believe and know that you were created to be a success.”
