John T. Tretiak, of Largo, Florida, formerly of Amsterdam, New York, passed away unexpectedly on March 11, 2026, at his home. Born in Amsterdam on July 11, 1954, he was the son of the late Thomas and Mildred Tretiak. Raised in Amsterdam, John graduated from Wilbur H. Lynch High School in 1972.
He served in the United States Army from 1974 to 1977, including time stationed in Germany. Later, while living in Florida, John worked as a bus driver for Mertz Transportation. He took great satisfaction in transporting veterans to Wounded Warrior events across the country, forming many lasting friendships and traveling extensively throughout the United States and Canada.
John is survived by his sisters, Chris (Dave) Montenaro of Amsterdam and Sue (John) Taber of Amsterdam; his brother, Bill Tretiak of Florida; nephews Paul Montenaro, Dave (April) Montenaro, and Aaric Montenaro; nieces Jessica Bogran, Ani, and Alliana; and several cousins.
