John Strong ObituaryObituary published on Legacy.com by Lohman Funeral Home Palm Coast on Feb. 26, 2026.John Strong, 93, passed away peacefully in his home on February 23, 2026, in Palm Coast,leaving behind a lifetime of stories, laughter, service, and love for his family.John was born and raised in Astoria, Queens before later moving to Long Island, where he builthis life defined by hard work and dedication to others. As a young man, he proudly served fouryears in the United States Army, spending time stationed in Austria. After his service, he workedas ground control for Pan American World Airways.John later dedicated himself to public service by joining the New York City Police Department.Never one to stop learning or growing, he returned to school and earned a master's degree insocial work, one of the accomplishments he was most proud of. He used that education to helpothers, working with Medicaid programs that supported elderly individuals and later serving as asocial worker with United Cerebral Palsy.Even in retirement, John's work ethic never slowed down. He became a school bus driver,continuing to stay active and connected to his community. Later in life, he moved to Florida andvolunteered with the Flagler County Sheriff's Office, always eager to give back.Alongside his civilian career, John served 23 years in the United States Coast Guard Reserve,retiring as a Chief Petty Officer. His commitment to service was something he carried with greatpride throughout his life.John lived life to the fullest. He loved traveling throughout the states and around the world, flyingplanes as a licensed pilot, sailing, shooting, and spending time at the casino or playing bingo.He enjoyed good food, a good drink, and above all good company. His gardens were anotherpoint of pride, and anyone who knew him knew how happy he was tending to them.Most of all, John was known for his personality. He was funny, hardworking, endlessly positive,and deeply family-oriented. He had a way of making people laugh and feel welcome whereverhe went. His greatest pride was always his family.John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy Strong. Later in life, he found loveagain, and shared 28 happy years with his wife, Marita Strong.He is survived by his three daughters: Donna (Paul) Willenbrock and their six children; Lisa(Ron) Samler and their three children; and Gina (Joe) Mercogliano and their five children. Healso shared a special bond with Denise (Lou) Vuono, who was like a fourth daughter to him,along with her three children.In total, John leaves behind 14 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and one great-grandchildon the way, each of whom brought him immense pride and joy.John Strong lived a long, full life marked by service, adventure, humor, and deep love for hisfamily. He will be remembered for his stories, his laughter, and the happiness he brought toeveryone around him.There will be a viewing on Thursday, February 26, 2026, from 5pm-8pm at Lohman Funeral Home located at 220 Palm Coast Parkway SW, Palm Coast, Florida 32137. There will be a Mass on Friday, February 27, 2026, at 11am at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church located at 4600 Belle Terre Parkway, Palm Coast, Florida 32164.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
