John Russell

John Russell

June 3, 1942 March 12, 2026

Salem, MA

John Merrill Russell, known to all as Jack, died peacefully at home in Salem, Massachusetts, on March 12, 2026, at the age of 83, surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness. The only child of the late Jefferson Russell and Mollen (Dohanyos) Russell, he was married for 56 years to the late Rev. Susan H. Russell, who passed in 2024.

Born in Knox, Pennsylvania, on June 3, 1942, Jack began studying the organ at age twelve. He attended Oberlin Conservatory, where he studied with Haskell Thomson, spent a semester at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, and toured the Soviet Union with the Oberlin College Choir in 1964. These formative experiences remained lifelong sources of inspiration. He earned a Master’s degree in Organ from Boston University on a Choral Conducting Fellowship and met Susan at one of his recitals. His distinguished career as a professor, choir conductor, and church musician spanned nearly six decades across Vermont, Ohio, Illinois, and Massachusetts. In 1974 he joined the faculty of the College of Wooster, serving as Professor of Organ and Director of the Wooster Chorus until 2008. A pivotal sabbatical year spent as Visiting Choral Scholar at Clare College, Cambridge University, in 1982–83 enriched both his teaching and his family life. Over his 34-year tenure at Wooster, he conducted countless concerts, led more than thirty chorus tours across North America, and profoundly influenced generations of students, colleagues, and friends through his mentorship, support, and genuine care.

As an organist and choir director, Jack served several parishes, most notably First Presbyterian Church in Wooster for more than twenty-five years, where he led the installation of the church’s Karl Wilhelm organ. After retiring from the College of Wooster, he became organist and choirmaster at Christ Church of Hamilton and Wenham, Massachusetts, working alongside Susan for seventeen years as she served in Stephen Ministry. In their later years, the couple found deep joy and sustenance in the loving community of Christ Church.

At the heart of Jack’s life was his profound love of people. He delighted in spirited, witty conversation and offered unwavering support, wise counsel, and practical help to anyone in need. He lived a full, spiritual, and grace-filled life beside his beloved Susan. His unconditional love touched countless lives and modeled compassion and faith. Jack’s greatest pride and joy were his family. He is survived by his sons, David of Hyde Park, Massachusetts, and Timothy of Marion, Massachusetts, their wives Tanya Maggi and Elizabeth (Garvey) Russell, and his cherished grandchildren Amelia (Millie), Teo, James, and Ada. Family gatherings were filled with meals, laughter, games, conversation, and always a fine dessert. He loved tennis, attending concerts, and traveling to visit friends. His enduring partnership with Susan shaped a wide and loving circle of family and friends.
