Decatur, TN
John Redling V was born on June 14, 1945, in Trenton, New Jersey, and passed away on March 4, 2026, at the age of 80 in Decatur, Tennessee. He made his home with his beloved wife Shirley in Decatur, a town he came to cherish. A skilled carpenter and dedicated member of Local Union 74, John owned his own business and left a lasting mark on the construction industry. He took great pride in his craft, creating beautiful pieces in his shop, including exceptional grandfather clocks that he sold across many states. In his younger years, he worked as a talented logger and found deep enjoyment in hunting and fishing, embracing the simple pleasures of the outdoors.
A passionate music lover from an early age, John sang with the New Jersey Magical Chorus Choir and gathered with friends every Tuesday evening to share songs and camaraderie. Outgoing and warm, he treasured his friendships, lively conversations, and time spent with those he held dear. He was a generous soul who supported St. Jude Children’s Hospital and the Disabled American Veterans through monthly donations, reflecting his compassionate spirit.
John is survived by his son, John Redling VI; his daughter, Michelle Elizabeth Redling Radcliffe; stepdaughter, Barbara Suzanne Delashmitt; stepson, Bill Bull; step-grandsons, Thomas Dunn and Joseph Dunn; and step-granddaughters, Samantha Pierce and Heather Fisher, whom he loved as his own. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, John Redling VII, Amanda Jane Redling, Lucas Clayton Radcliff, and Abigail Radcliff. He is also survived by his sisters, Anna Caroline Store and Barbara Joan Pyatt, special friends Jeff and Dianna Ghorley and Mildred McCoin, as well as many great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Redling IV and Anna Redling, and the love of his life, Shirley Redling. In accordance with his wishes, his remains were cremated and laid to rest at Powell Cemetery in Decatur, Tennessee.
