Sandusky, OH
John R. Solly, Sr., affectionately known as “Johnny,” passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Toledo, Ohio, on February 2, 1942, he was the son of Jesse and Hazel (Mansburger) Solly. A life defined by dedication, craftsmanship, and deep family devotion came to a close, leaving behind a legacy treasured by all who knew him.
Johnny met the love of his life, Margaret A. Solly, at Toledo Hospital. They married on August 31, 1961, and shared a lifelong partnership filled with adventure and unwavering commitment. As a skilled welder with the United Steel Workers, he earned a reputation as the expert craftsman others relied upon for major projects. He began his career as a fitter on the Central pipeline alongside his father-in-law, Jack Kerin, and became the go-to man for challenging work that demanded precision and pride. He retired in 2003 after a distinguished career built on hard work and integrity.
Beyond his profession, Johnny found joy in dancing, bowling, playing pool, hunting, fishing, and casino visits. He and Margaret traveled extensively across the United States, with Mississippi and Florida holding especially dear places in their hearts. After retiring, they settled in Sandusky, Ohio, near the calming waters of Lake Erie, where Johnny spent many contented years boating and working at Sam’s Club and the KOA of Sandusky, forming lasting friendships along the way.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Margaret; daughter Tracy (Jeff) Person; son John (Theresa) Solly; brothers Jeff (Dora) Solly and Kevin (Cheri) Solly; grandchildren Nikki, Chris (Kasey), Nick (Leah), Cody, Shane (Emily), Samantha, Shaun (Makayla), Sydney (Geoff), and John (Emily); and fifteen great-grandchildren: Aidan, Kayleigh, Conor, Madyson, Macy, Maisley, Declan, Carter, Lincoln, Adelaide, Isac, Elenor, Olivia, Adelin, and Harper. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Gilbert, sister Wanda, and beloved grandson Porter (Andy) Shambarger. Johnny’s greatest pride remained his family, whose lives he enriched with his warmth, skill, and steadfast love.
