John Philippe Delano, Jr.

John Philippe Delano, Jr.

April 13, 1947 March 5, 2026

Dorchester, MA

John Philippe Delano, Jr. passed away suddenly on March 5, 2026, at the age of 78. A longtime resident of Dorchester, Massachusetts, he was born on April 13, 1947, in Newton, Massachusetts, the son of the late Lydia L. (Frederick) and John Phillip Delano of Boxborough, Massachusetts.

Educated at public and private schools in Massachusetts, John completed a few semesters of college before facing significant mental health challenges that shaped much of his adult life. For approximately 45 years he lived in group homes in Dorchester, where he was affectionately known as “Gentleman John.” He was an attentive and respected member of his community, admired for his remarkable visual and auditory memory, meticulous attention to detail, commitment to safety, dedication to recycling and conserving resources, and his ability to complete assigned tasks with care. Those who knew him also cherished his moments of great clarity and awareness, along with his distinctive Santa Claus-style beard.

John held deep affection for dogs, especially the family dogs Ginger, Major, Hill, and Smitty, as well as his sister’s Beagles, Flo and Howard. He also loved horses, particularly Princess, Lady, and the Morgan horses. He found joy in the sounds of pipe organs and the music written for them, Boston history and architecture, his Delano family heritage, gardenia plants, and simple pleasures such as holiday dinners, butternut squash, watermelon, burgers, Boston Creme Pie, and root beer. From about 1985 to 2005, he volunteered at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Dorchester, where he ran errands and faithfully managed the Sunday morning coffee hour.

He is survived by his sister, Margaret L. Delano of Boxborough, Massachusetts, and several cousins. His sister extends deep gratitude to the many compassionate mental health professionals and other caregivers who recognized John’s positive qualities and supported him throughout six decades of challenges, as well as to the parishioners of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church for their kindness and understanding. Services will be private, with interment in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda, New York.
