JOHN COWAN ObituaryObituary published on Legacy.com by Alternatives Cremation and Funeral Service - Oklahoma City on Mar. 4, 2026.John Patrick "Pat" Cowan passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at the age of 72.Pat was born on August 1, 1953, in Sayre, Oklahoma, to John and Patty Cowan, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Mike Cowan of Sayre.Pat was a 1971 graduate of Chickasha High School, where his leadership qualities were evident early on. He served as President of the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA). Under his leadership, the Chickasha VICA chapter was recognized as Outstanding Chapter in the State for three years straight, but then also received national recognition multiple times, including being named Outstanding Chapter in America, an honor that was very special to him because his father, John Cowan was the VICA instructor. Pat was also recognized as Outstanding Extemporaneous Speaker in the nation, which would be no surprise to anyone that knew Pat.He continued his education at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, earning a degree in Business. While at SWOSU, Pat again distinguished himself as a leader, serving as President of the Student Senate. His college years further shaped the leadership skills and entrepreneurial spirit that would define his professional life.Following graduation, Pat built a successful career in the Oil and Gas industry. Alongside his brother Mike and sister Kay, he founded Cowan Properties in Sayre, Oklahoma. His business acumen, work ethic, and vision helped establish a strong foundation for the company. While living and working in Sayre, Pat was proud to serve his community as Mayor, giving back to the town that meant so much to him.Throughout his career, Pat continued to expand his work in the Oil and Gas industry, starting and operating multiple successful businesses. He was an active member and past president of the National Association of Royalty Owners(NARO) and remained deeply engaged in issues important to independent producers and mineral owners. He was also appointed by Oklahoma Governor George Nigh to the Interstate Oil Compact Commission. He was also a proud member of the Sons of the American Revolution, honoring his family's heritage and commitment to the nation's founding principles.Pat carried with him the values of hard work, loyalty, and devotion to family that defined his upbringing. He was known for his steady presence, his willingness to help others, and his deep roots in the communities he served.Pat is survived by his wife of 32 years, Elaine Braver Cowan. Their marriage was marked by enduring love and unwavering commitment. He is also survived by siblings: Kay Allen and her husband, Von, of Sayre; Marianne Eaton and her husband, Ron, of Chickasha and brother Jim Cowan and his wife Dawn, also of Chickasha, Brother in law Rob Braver and his wife Karen of OKC, Brother in law Joe Braver and wife Maureen of Atlanta Georgia and Mother in law Betsy Braver of OKC. He leaves behind numerous nephews and nieces, cousins, and many dear friends who will remember him for his integrity, leadership, and quiet strength.Pat's life was a testament to faithfulness. Faithfulness to his wife and his extended family. Pat loved the Thunder, the Sooners and keeping up with all the happenings in OKC, Chickasha and Sayre.A private memorial service will be held at a date to be determined.
