John Madden

May 9, 1939 February 20, 2026

Englewood, FL

John Paul Madden Sr., born May 9th, 1939, in Winthrop, Massachusetts, passed away surrounded by the love of his family on Friday, February 20th, 2026. The youngest of 9 children, John carried with him the strength and resilience that came from growing up in a large family. A proud Navy veteran serving at the height of the Cold War, John married his high school sweetheart, Carole Shea, beginning a devoted partnership that would span 64 years. Together, they built a life centered on family and hard work.

After spending his youth in Amherst, Mass, John primarily lived in Glen Head, NY, where he served for 20 years as the superintendent of Engineers Country Club. His dedication to his craft and love for the game of golf eventually led him and Carole to Englewood, Florida, where he started his own golf course supply business. The Glen Head years involved raising his two sons and nurturing their love of sports. As such, he coached for several years in the Glen Head / Glenwood Little League and served as president of the North Shore Soccer Club in the late 70s and early 80s. John was known for his affable personality, boisterous, contagious laugh, and unwavering enthusiasm for the things he loved. An avid sports fan, he was a Tampa Bay Buccaneers season ticket holder. He enjoyed the music of Johnny Cash and classic war movies and Westerns like The Magnificent Seven. He loved dining out while drinking Manhattans, and would never turn down a bacon egg and cheese from the Garden Deli.

John is survived by his beloved wife Carole; his sons, John (Allison), Tim (Cathy); his cherished grandchildren, Catherine, Carol, Henry, and Esme; and his faithful dog, Betty the 3rd. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

John will be buried next to his parents in a private ceremony in Amherst, Mass.

A summer memorial will be announced.
