John Jeffery Walter

John Jeffery Walter, 63, of Jackson, passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.

Born on June 8, 1962, in Cape Girardeau, he was the son of Alfred G. “Pop” and Arlene Louise Krueger Walter. On April 24, 1982, John married Valerie “Velvet” Legrand at Hanover Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau.

John was a man who found joy in quiet, hands-on pursuits. Whether tending his yard, working on woodworking projects, or preparing for a camping trip, he was always piddling with something meaningful to him. He loved listening to Elvis and took deep satisfaction in life’s simple pleasures. Above all, he cherished his family. He was devoted to his wife of 44 years, Velvet, and took immense pride in his grandchildren, rarely missing an opportunity to cheer them on at their events.

He is survived by his wife, Velvet; their three children, Joe (McKenzie) Walter of St. Louis, Missouri, Jessica (Tim) Stearns of Jackson, and Josh Walter and his fiancée Laura Petree of Columbia, Missouri; and his grandchildren, Ella, Beckett, Lexi, Kaylee, and Kasen. He is also survived by his siblings, Jane Cotner, Jim (Pam) Walter, Mike (Lisa) Walter, and Susie (Don) Howard, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
