John Mellin ObituaryObituary published on Legacy.com by St. John's Family Funeral Home & Crematory on Mar. 16, 2026.It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John H. Mellin, who left us peacefully on March 13, 2026, at his second home in St. Augustine, Florida, at the age of 89. John resided in both Portsmouth, NH and St. Augustine and was happy to be at the beach during his final days. Born on January 24, 1937, in Nashua, New Hampshire, John lived a life filled with love, laughter, and a deep commitment to education and service. After graduating from Nashua High School in 1954, John dedicated three years to the United States Army, serving his country with honor. Following his military service, he began a career in the trades, completing his studies at Coyne Electrical School in Boston and working as an electrician. His passion for service continued as he joined the Nashua Police Department, where he would often reminisce about favorite stories, including a memorable encounter with the legendary Johnny Cash that he fondly recounted with a twinkle in his eye. He had a penchant for the worst jokes imaginable.John's journey in education commenced after furthering his studies at Saint Anselm College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1968, followed by a Master's degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1972. He spent many rewarding years teaching English, first at Manchester Memorial High School and then at Nashua High, where he retired in 1993. John's love for storytelling and his passion for literature inspired countless students and enriched their lives. In 1984, John married the love of his life, Sue Mellin, declaring it the best decision he ever made. Together, they shared a profound bond and a love for adventure, sailing the Northeast coast on their beloved Catalina sailboats-affectionately named Obsession I, Obsession II, and finally Innisfree. Their journeys also led them to the British Virgin Islands, where they charted new seas and created cherished memories.John was preceded in death by his parents: Paul & Louise (Merrill) Mellin, his sister, Marisue Grube and his sister in law, Marie Mellin.
