John Baylor ObituaryObituary published on Legacy.com by Hughes Funeral Home and Crematory - Daphne on Mar. 5, 2026.John Gibson Baylor Jr., 68, of Mobile, Alabama, died Monday, February 23, 2026, at Mobile Infirmary.Born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, John moved to Mobile at a young age. John attended South Brookley Elementary, followed by John S Shaw High School and later Murphy High School.A man who drew his own path, he decided to tour with his bands, Wizard and Whistle Britches, throughout the late 70's and early 80's, until finding a job in woodworking and carpentry. John later went to college and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at University of South Alabama in 1989. During his tenure there, he interned for the late Senator Howell Heflin from the mid to the late 80's notably assisting the Senator during the Iran-Contra affair.Shortly before graduation, he was introduced to his wife. He was later accepted to the University of Mississippi where he graduated with his Juris Doctorate in 1993. John attended St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, All Saint's Episcopal Church and St. Luke's Episcopal Church over his lifetime and was a founding member and President of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Chapter at University of South Alabama as well as the Vice President and Chief Justice of the Student Government Association. John enjoyed a fulfilling career in law by specializing in Social Security Disability for nearly 30 years. Over that time, he helped thousands of clients regain their dignity and secure an income. But John's greatest joys in life came from his family.He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Terrill Baylor (neè Dumas), his sister, Martha Baylor Sessions, his brother, Glenwood "Sam" Baylor and his aunt, Catherine "Tinka" Dumas Dunn.He is survived by his devoted wife of 35 years, Stacey Sutton Baylor; his four children, John Gibson Baylor, III, Ellen Marie Baylor, Meaghann Terrill Baylor, and Gwendolynn Adelaide Baylor; his father, John Gibson Baylor; his niece, Baylor Sessions Escobio; his nephew, Robert Lamar Sessions II; and his cousin, Cynthia Dunn Headley; as well as his granddaughter, Savanna Marie Baylor.The service will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church located at 1050 Azalea Road in Mobile, AL 36693. The family will welcome visitors at 1:00 p.m. and the service will begin at 2:00 p.m. While flowers are welcomed, John's family asks that donations be made to the Leukemia And Lymphoma Society in his honor.Hughes Funeral Home, 26209 Pollard Road, Daphne, AL, is assisting the family.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
