John Fikkert

d. 2026

Grand Rapids, MI

John Fikkert, age 84, passed away on Friday, March 13, 2026. Born in the Netherlands, he immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of ten. He graduated from Calvin College with a degree in music education and later earned a master’s degree in music from Michigan State University.

John began his teaching career at Seymour Christian School, where he taught music and Bible for four years. He then spent the remainder of his career with Jenison Public Schools, teaching music to students from kindergarten through high school. One of his greatest joys was directing high school musicals, where he taught the music and acting while also designing and creating costumes and sets. A gifted musician, he served as pianist and organist at Burton Heights Christian Reformed Church and Bethany United Reformed Church, and he directed choirs at Zion Reformed Church and Godwin Heights Christian Reformed Church.

Those who knew John remember his generous heart and the caring spirit he showed through his willingness to help others, often accompanied by his gentle humor. Above all, his deepest love was for his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, followed closely by his family and his music.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Gezeina Fikkert. John is survived by his sister, Angela (Bill) Hoeksema; his nephew, Jason (Clarita) Hoeksema; and many cousins and friends.
