Cameron, TX

John Edward Lewin, 81, of Cameron, Texas, passed away on March 6, 2026, at Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas. Born on May 25, 1944, in Oneida, New York, to Thomas and Evelyn Lewin, John built a life grounded in hard work and quiet competence. He spent his career in construction and operating heavy machinery, work that reflected his strong ethic and hands-on nature.

He married his high school sweetheart, Carol, in Vernon, New York. In 1972, they moved to Texas, where they shared 61 years together. John found simple pleasures in golf and camping, and he delighted in friendly competition, whether trading laughs over games of horseshoes and jarts or greeting friends and family with his famously strong handshake. Known as a true character, he was a constant tinkerer who could usually be found in his garage working on some project. Even in his final days, his playful spirit endured, earning him the affectionate nickname of “escape artist” among hospital staff.

Beneath his teasing humor lay a deep kindness, especially toward animals, many of whom he rescued and cared for throughout his life. Yet nothing brought him greater joy than his family. He treasured every moment spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

John is survived by his daughters, Paula Vaculin and her husband Alan, and Pamela Green; six grandchildren, Robbie, Lacey, Will, Michael, Jason, and Amanda; five great-grandchildren; his brother, Claude Lewin of Vernon, New York; and his sister, Esther Duerr of Taberg, New York. He will be remembered for his humor, his love of family, his kindness to animals, and the joy he brought to those who knew him.
