Preserve forever →John E. Tinder
Ladysmith, WI
John Edward Tinder, born August 8, 1962, in Ladysmith, Wisconsin, to Bill and Audrey (Thorpe) Tinder, passed away on March 12, 2026. The third of four children, John lived a life defined by quiet service, steadfast commitment to his community, and deep devotion to family and friends.
A lifelong resident of Ladysmith, John began his career as a teenager bagging groceries at Scott and Connie’s Super Value. That early experience grew into more than four decades in the grocery industry, where he advanced into management roles. Known for his exceptional customer service and willingness to go the extra mile, he became the person customers turned to for special requests and answers. After retiring from grocery work in 2019, he took on new challenges as a salesman at Toycen Motors and later machining precision gun parts at Henry Firearms. He approached each role with the same dedication and care.
John met the love of his life, Debbie, and proposed soon after. They were married on May 9, 1987, and spent the next 39 years building a life together in Ladysmith. The couple enjoyed long motorcycle rides, traveling to softball tournaments, exploring the shores of Lake Superior for yooperlite rocks and sea glass, and sharing quiet evenings at home. John cherished time with his family, never missing family dinners, birthdays, holidays, or celebrations. His nieces and nephews affectionately called him “Uncle M&M” for the candy he always carried and the giant bear hugs and laughter he offered them. He was also a devoted cribbage player, teller of often inappropriate jokes, skilled hunter, and loyal friend who rarely missed a nightly poker game.
John found great joy at his cabin in the woods, where he spent many peaceful hours hunting whitetail deer by both archery and rifle, proudly displaying his trophies at home and at the cabin. He gave generously to his community, donating over 170 pints of blood over 42 years and earning recognition from the American Red Cross for his CMV-negative donations that helped save the lives of vulnerable newborns.
John is survived by his beloved wife Debbie, his mother Audrey, sisters Jane (Tim) Strobl and Sue (Greg) Lazar, brother Tony “Flipper” (Renee) Tinder, father-in-law Martin Huhn, sister-in-law Donna Neste, brother-in-law Brian (Amy) Huhn, and many nieces and nephews, along with his beloved cat Jesse. He was preceded in death by his father Bill and mother-in-law Karen.
John had an innate ability to sense the needs of others and responded with a steadying smile, a reassuring hug, and his gentle, generous spirit. Those fortunate enough to know him as family or friend are better for having shared in his life.
