Passed March 10, 2026
Waukegan, IL
John Edward Dehmlow, 98, of Waukegan, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on March 10, 2026. Born in Highwood to Edward August and Anna Mae Dehmlow, he served with pride in the United States Marine Corps during both World War II and the Korean War. He remained deeply connected to his military family through membership in the Waukegan Little Fort Lions Club and the Lake County Det 801 Marine Corps League.
In April 1960, John married Joan Marie Dailey, a lifelong Waukegan resident. Together they raised six children: Elizabeth, Ann, Margaret, Catherine, Mary, and John. He was blessed with five grandchildren: Sabrina, Sylvia, Samantha, Sarah, and Nicholas. Devoted to his family, community, and work, John brought a remarkable work ethic to everything he did. He spent 25 years at Kleinschmidt Laboratories in Deerfield, followed by 20 years at Nixdorf Computer. Even in later life, he continued working as a courier for Lake Forest Hospital until the age of 85.
At home, John loved cooking family meals with ingredients from Cribb’s Fine Foods, enjoying a Manhattan, and reading Tom Clancy novels. He and Joan cherished their date nights at Louie's Restaurant, often joined by their dear friend Richard “Rick” Hiser. In retirement, he found joy playing cards with his children, visiting with family, watching John Wayne movies and Wheel of Fortune, spending quiet time with his two cats, and listening to classical music.
John will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the medical team at the James A. Lovell Veterans Administration and the compassionate staff at Journey Care Hospice.
