February 7, 1938— March 11, 2026
East Providence, RI
John Terra, a man of steadfast work ethic and deep devotion to his family, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026, at the age of 88. Born on February 7, 1938, in the seaside town of Praia da Vitória, Terceira, Azores, he journeyed from the shores of Portugal to become a cherished member of the Portuguese-American community in New England.
At the age of 16, John began working at Lajes Field Air Force Base, where he served until 1967. That same year, he emigrated to the United States, bringing with him a trademark reliability that defined his career. He spent more than 30 years at Davol, Inc., advancing to the role of foreman. Respected by colleagues for his leadership and experience, he served as a mentor and guide until his retirement.
John remained deeply connected to his Portuguese heritage as a longtime active member of the Ateneu Luso Americano Club in Fall River, Massachusetts. An athlete in his youth, he was a lifelong, passionate supporter of the Benfica football club and the New England Patriots. He also held a great appreciation for traditional Portuguese cuisine and was a familiar, friendly presence at local restaurants.
Above all, John was a devoted family man. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Maria de Deus, whose partnership remained the cornerstone of his life. He took special joy in his role as “Padrinho” to his many nieces and nephews, who will remember him for fishing trips, soccer matches, and the steady, caring presence of a man who lived fully for those he loved.
