July 6, 1943— March 5, 2026
Coppell, TX
John Charles Staten, 82, of Coppell, Texas, passed away peacefully at home on March 5, 2026.
Born on July 6, 1943, in Emporia, Kansas, to Hervey Edward Staten and Lorraine Mae Staten, John was known throughout Greenwood County as the “Hamilton Kid.” He embraced life with energy and humor, often seen playing ball, chasing girls, and raising a little hell. He graduated from Hamilton High School with the Class of 1960 and remained deeply connected to his classmates throughout his life, mourning their losses while cherishing the enduring friendships they shared.
John continued his education, earning a degree from Emporia State College in 1969 and an MBA in 1976. He was a member of the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity. From 1963 to 1967, he proudly served in the United States Air Force, attaining the rank of Sergeant. Though he often joked about not enjoying taking orders, he loved his country and treasured the lifelong bonds formed during his service.
He began his career in Kansas as Personnel Director for Didde-Glaser in Emporia, later holding marketing and leadership positions with Hensley Steel, Elk, Burris, and Genstar. He became a respected figure in the roofing manufacturing industry. In 1976, John moved to Texas, where he met the love of his life, Laurie, in 1983. They married on May 5, 1990, and welcomed their daughter Lauren the following year.
At 48, John chose early retirement to stay home and raise his daughter, a decision that reflected his deepest priority: family. He worked hard to keep loved ones close, and his great nieces and nephews adored their “Unca Johnny.” He found profound joy as a grandfather to his grandson Lyle, who called him “Papa,” and to his daughter Lauren he was simply “The Greatest.” John never met a stranger and possessed a remarkable ability to turn acquaintances into lifelong friends.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Laurie; his daughter Lauren and her husband James Cooper; his cherished grandson Lyle; and many family members and friends who loved him dearly.
John will be laid to rest at Janesville Township Cemetery in Hamilton, Kansas, joining his parents, siblings, and other loved ones, in accordance with his wishes. His humor, loyalty, and deep love for family will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
