John Canney Foster

John C. Foster, 30, of Elmira, New York, passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2026. Born on July 31, 1995, at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Buffalo, New York, he was the son of Mary Johanna (Canney) Foster and the late Edward Foster.

John grew up in Elmira after his family moved there in 1997. He attended Holy Family Primary School, Broadway Middle School, and Southside High School. As a boy scout in Troop 43, he developed a lifelong love of the outdoors and a deep appreciation for nature. A naturally gifted musician, John played both piano and guitar with ease and was a dedicated and prolific songwriter who worked tirelessly at his craft. He also held a keen interest in the legal system, often observing courtroom proceedings from the gallery, and cared deeply about the less fortunate, including the homeless and animals.

In addition to his mother, John is survived by his brother William and his sister Mary. He was predeceased by both sets of grandparents but cherished his large extended family, including many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Services will be held privately for close family members. Those wishing to honor John’s memory may send donations to The Arc Chemung-Schuyler or the Chemung County SPCA.
