John Allen Nickerson, age 75, of Brentwood, Tennessee, passed away on March 5, 2026, in Nashville. Born on October 10, 1950, in Garland, Texas, to Jesse and Ruth Nickerson, John graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1969. A gifted athlete, he was drafted by the Atlanta Braves yet chose to play college baseball at Pan American University, where he earned All-District VI honors as catcher and graduated Cum Laude in 1973. He began his coaching career as the youngest college head baseball coach in the country at Hill Junior College and later coached at Paris Junior College. His deep love for the game endured throughout his life, bringing him lasting joy as he mentored and encouraged young players.
In 1978, John transitioned into a successful business career with La-Z-Boy, Inc., serving as a sales representative in Northeast Texas and Northern Louisiana. He earned the Summit Club Award as the company’s top sales representative in 1993. In 2001, he and his family moved to Nashville, where he established and operated the highly successful La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries in Middle Tennessee. His family continues to carry forward his vision and legacy in the business he built.
John was an avid golfer and a beloved member of Brentwood Country Club. He and his wife, Mandy, shared a passion for travel, creating cherished memories on many family trips. Deeply committed to service, he served for fifteen years on the Board of Trustees for Pittsburg ISD in Texas and gave generously of his time to his church as a vestry member, lay reader, and Church School teacher. For the past twenty-five years, he was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Franklin, Tennessee. Above all, John was known for his integrity, leadership, faith, compassion, humility, and generosity. He loved his family with unwavering devotion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Ruth Nickerson, and his brother, Jesse III.
John is survived by his wife of fifty-two years, Amanda Brown Nickerson; son Preston (Katelyn); daughter Katy; son Andrew; grandchildren Syler and Sophia; brothers Bill Nickerson (Donna) and Jim Nickerson (Astrid); siblings-in-law Teresa Nickerson, Lewis Brown (Kerry), Pam Broadnax (Bob), and Amy Robinson (Rick); and many cherished nieces and nephews.
