May 9, 1948— March 10, 2026
Huron, SD
Joel C. Aamodt, age 77, of Huron, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 10, 2026 at his home.
Born on May 9, 1948, in Berkeley, California, to Conrad and Elvira “Vavi” (Olson) Aamodt, Joel spent much of his youth in Japan, where his father served as a Lutheran pastor and missionary. He embraced the culture fully, becoming fluent in Japanese, an ability that remained with him throughout his life. After graduating from the American School in Japan in Tokyo, he attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, and earned a degree in International Relations.
Joel served as an interpreter at the 1970 World’s Fair in Osaka, then moved to Guam, where he worked as a tennis instructor while continuing to interpret for Japanese film crews. He returned often to Japan, particularly to Lake Nojiri, where his family kept a summer cabin shared with many other missionary families. Later, he moved to Huron, South Dakota, to care for his retired parents. He remained active in tennis instruction and warmly hosted friends from Japan who came to visit.
Joel had a gentle, laid-back spirit and a philosophy of living fully in the moment. He found deep joy in music, art, photography, tennis, Japanese culture, and above all, in the people he knew and loved. He was preceded in death by his parents, Connie and Vavi. He is survived by his brothers Kim (Linda) Aamodt and Dean (Judy) Aamodt, his niece Brie Aamodt, and his nephews Jordan and Nelson Aamodt.
