Joe McKinney

Joe McKinney

April 13, 1946 March 10, 2026

McKee, KY

Joe McKinney, 79, of McKee, passed away on March 10, 2026, at his residence. Born on April 13, 1946, in Jackson County, Kentucky, to the late Leonard McKinney and Della (Tincher) Snodgrass, he was raised by William and Pearl McKinney.

A proud Vietnam veteran who served as a helicopter mechanic, Joe carried his military service with him throughout his life and was later honored as a Kentucky Colonel. After retiring from many years as a bus driver and working at the bus garage, he continued serving his community as a councilman. A longtime Mason, he deeply valued fellowship, loyalty, and service to others. Joe was a familiar face at the Farmers Market, where he sold his well-known honey and produce, and he was widely admired for his generous spirit and willingness to lend a helping hand.

He loved the outdoors, spending countless hours fishing, hunting, and tending his garden. Joe took great pleasure in canning food and sharing what he grew with family and friends. Known as an excellent cook, he often hosted fish fries and maintained a cherished Sunday tradition of preparing frog legs for his loved ones. He found joy in simple pleasures—time spent with his loyal dog and constant companion, Romie, watching westerns, enjoying meals (especially KFC), and driving around town. Though sometimes stubborn, he possessed a heart of gold and a sense of humor that kept those around him laughing.

Joe is survived by his sons, Billy (Tarena) McKinney of Berea and Freddie (Sarah Baxley) McKinney of Irvine, and his cherished grandchildren, Bridget (Mason), Billy Joe, Brad, Kyle, and Sage. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jerry McKinney. He leaves behind many friends, neighbors, and loved ones who will remember a man who lived life on his own terms, loved his family deeply, remained proud of his country, and found his greatest happiness sharing meals, laughter, and stories with the people he cared for.
