Joe McCoy McFee, 84, of Burnsville, passed away on March 4, 2026. Born in Buncombe County, North Carolina, on April 16, 1941, to the late Lennie and Ida Mae Jackson McFee, he was raised on the family farm on McFee Road in the Beaverdam community. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Tweed McFee; his children, Stephanie Frady (Joe), David (Brenda), and Derrick; granddaughters Brianne McFee Burleson (Trenton) and Caroline McFee; great-granddaughter Blaire Burleson; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and three brothers.
Joe devoted 37 years to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, serving in Transylvania, Graham, and Yancey counties. He played a meaningful role in the statewide turkey restoration project, work that was featured in a 1992 issue of National Geographic magazine. Deeply committed to his community, he was a 40-year charter member of the West Yancey Fire Department and served as its president for 10 years. He also held leadership positions in the Lions Club and various church organizations, and was a longtime member of Middle Fork Baptist Church.
Those who knew Joe will remember his great sense of humor, kind and gentle spirit, and steadfast love for his family. He cherished the outdoors and found great joy in fishing and hunting trips with loved ones. His quiet strength and loving presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him. The family extends special gratitude to Tabitha Mathis, Rhoda Riddle, and Compassionate Care WNC for their dedicated care and support.
