Joe Casarez Astran, a beloved son, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 1, 2026, in his hometown of Austin, Texas. Born on January 3, 1950, Joe’s life was deeply rooted in the city where he grew up and built a legacy of warmth, creativity, and quiet strength.

Joe was a man who savored the simple beauties of life. Every day, he took walks spanning one to two miles, delighting in sight-seeing and the endless horizons that inspired his soul. His love for nature was evident in his hands, which often carefully picked the most beautiful flowers, transforming them into heartfelt expressions of love. This artistic spirit extended into many of his hobbies: Joe cherished drawing, indulged in reading his hard copy of the American Statesmen Newspaper with a measured reverence, and mastered freehand color stitching. His creative touch moved from thread to ceramics and even to the intricate craft of making macramé for his mother, a precious labor of love that few could replicate. At home, Joe enjoyed making homemade sling shots, a nod to the playful side of his character.

His evenings were a tapestry of favorite sounds and sights—music flowing through the air as he watched his cherished cowboy and action movies. A 24-ounce Highlife so-di-pop and a cigar rested by his side, completing moments that were quintessentially “Joe.”

Joe is survived by his loving family who carry forward his spirit: his son Martin Astran and daughter Susie Ann Medrano, his granddaughter Bonnie Marie, grandson Johnny Joe, and great-grandsons Rocky Jr. and Na’Lijah. He is also remembered by his brothers Paul Astran Jr., Alex Astran, and Andrew Astran, alongside his sister Vicky Lopez. His life was further enriched by the many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends whose lives he touched in countless ways.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Astran Sr., his mother Victoria Astran, and his sister Christina Rangel, whose memories he held dear.

Joe Casarez Astran’s journey through life was marked by tenderness, creativity, and a commitment to the simple joys that make each day special. His peaceful passing gently closed a chapter filled with love and artistry, leaving behind the rich legacy of a life well-lived and a heart deeply cherished.
