July 7, 1934— March 8, 2026
Tampa, FL
Joanne Sutton Shuman, 91, of Tampa, Florida, passed away on March 8, 2026, surrounded by her devoted daughters, Deborah, Patricia, and Lisa, who tenderly sang to her a cherished melody she had taught them in their youth.
Born on July 7, 1934, in Glenwood, Georgia, to Idus and Mildred Sutton, Joanne was a woman of remarkable skill, warmth, and quiet strength. A gifted seamstress, she lovingly crafted clothing for her children, including wedding dresses, prom gowns, and bridesmaids’ dresses. She delighted in creating Christmas ornaments and crocheting blankets for newborns and family members, each stitch a lasting expression of her deep care. She found joy in working puzzles and playing solitary games, and she cherished camping trips with her husband Charles, relaxing in the pool, and spending time with her sister Betty.
Above all, Joanne was a devoted mother of five whose selfless spirit defined her. She remained a steadfast presence for her family through life’s challenges. She shared a special bond with her dear friend Francis Frazier, whom she faithfully assisted with transportation to medical appointments, the salon, grocery shopping, banking, and other needs, while always including her in family holiday gatherings.
Joanne was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Shuman; her parents, Idus and Mildred Sutton; her son, Mitchell A. Rodriguez; her stepson, Joey Rodriguez; her sister, Betty Wallace; her nephew, Curtis Wallace; her brothers, Gerald and Thomas Sutton; and her great-granddaughter, Jordyn Cavey. She is survived by her children, David Rodriguez (Betty), Deborah Rodriguez Cavey (Jeffrey), Patricia Rodriguez (Patti), Lisa Rodriguez Fernandez (Skye), and Judy Rodriguez Griffin (Kenny); her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her three stepdaughters, Denise Shuman Dailey (Bill), Darleen Shuman Smith (Vernon), and Melody Shuman Alvarez (Dan); and her step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
