She was born on October 31, 1930, in Chicago, IL.Beloved wife of the late William Mines and the late Thomas D. Nyhan, loving mother of Kathy (Tom) Dunning, William (Lynn) Mines, Barbara "Barb" (Alan) Mines, Colleen (Bill) Benjamin and Patty (Steve) Locke, loving stepmother of Thomas (the late Beth) Nyhan, Larry (Yukiko) Nyhan, Dennis (Melanie) Nyhan and Suzanne Nyhan, adored grandmother of Conan, Kieran, Tristan and Brittany; Colleen and Annie; Ryan and Kevin; Thomas, cherished great-grandmother of Sophia, Callum and Auden; Benjamin and Charlotte; Paisley and Grayson, daughter of the late John and Catherine Donahue and friend of many.Joan grew up on Chicago's South Side, attended St. Kilian Catholic Church and was a graduate of Aquinas High School.Joan moved to Lisle in 1967 and joined St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. She was an avid volunteer, served as a teacher's aide and founded the girls' volleyball program which she ran for 25 years. She also served as an NCAA volleyball referee for many years with USA distinction. She was on the board of directors of the Great Lakes Region and was an official chair.Joan also volunteered at the Salvation Army in Aurora, IL as a reading specialist, helped with Meals on Wheels and often took her pets to visit the sick and the elderly.A visitation will be held on Friday, March 27, 2026, 4:00-8:00 PM at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville, IL 60540.Prayers will begin Saturday, March 28, 9:15 AM at the funeral home and will process to 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joan of Arc Church, 820 Division St. (Kingston & Front Streets), Lisle, IL 60532 with Fr. James Radek officiating.Interment will follow at SS.
