O'Boyle, March 2, 2026, at age 93.Joan was born on September 17, 1932, in Lincoln, Nebraska to Granville and Velma (Currens) Tait.Joan moved to Des Moines with Velma, where her mother worked at Arnold's, selling women's apparel, for over 25 years. Joan was adopted by Edward Paterson after Edward and Velma married. She became a lifelong resident of the "East Side." Joan attended Phillips Grade School, Woodrow Wilson Jr. High, and Des Moines East High School. She was a proud member of the Class of 1950; "Go Scarlets!"Joan and James P. O'Boyle were married on July 1,1950, at St. Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines. Joan worked as a housewife throughout their nearly 60 years of marriage. Joan later worked for the Des Moines Public School lunch program as a cook, and later as supervisor and manager for 29 years. James was a member of Local 33 Plumbers and Steamfitters for over 50 years.Preceding Joan in death are her husband James, parents Edward and Velma, brother Ronald, and sister Velma "Pat" Allen.Surviving Joan are her sons: Michael and his wife Sharon of Greenville, IL; Dennis and his wife Patricia of Chillicothe, IL; Kevin of Des Moines, IA; Timothy of Des Moines, IA; Thomas of Vermillion, SD; and William and his wife Debbie of Carrollton, IL; brother William and his wife Sheryl of Des Moines, IA; sister Susan and her husband David of Des Moines, IA; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly. Joan will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and great friend to all who knew her. She will be remembered as truly an "Angel on Earth."Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 AM on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Des Moines, with burial at Altoona Cemetery in Altoona, Iowa. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Family and friends will gather to celebrate Joan's life at Copper Creek Golf Club and Event Center in Pleasant Hill from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Thursday.Memorials may be directed to Copper Shores Village, The "Nest" at 1500 Edgewater Drive, Pleasant Hill, IA 50327 or Suncrest Hospice at 5959 Village View Drive #100, West Des Moines, IA 50266.Online condolences are welcome at www.IlesCares.com.
