Jo Ann Bowman

Lummi Island, WA

Jo Ann Bowman, born September 8, 1932, in Taloga, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully at her home on Lummi Island, Washington, on February 20, 2026. A woman of indomitable spirit, she touched countless lives through her compassion, unwavering principles, and readiness to speak her mind and take action. Deeply committed to helping others, Jo Ann was a generous philanthropist whose kindness and support benefited many.

She was the daughter of Josie and Homer Hoyt. The family moved to the Longview/Kelso area of Washington when she was young, where she grew up on a stump farm surrounded by the love of her parents and siblings. Jo Ann graduated from high school and attended Western Washington University, where she met her husband, Jack Bowman. The couple had two sons and, after Jack’s graduation, moved to Forks, Washington, where he taught music. Their life together took them to California, where Jo Ann earned her bachelor’s degree and became an elementary school teacher. Over the years, they traveled the world, achieved success in their endeavors, and formed deep, lasting bonds with friends and family.

Later in life, Jo Ann and Jack retired to Lummi Island, where they continued to cherish time with loved ones and build new relationships. They remained closely connected to Western Washington University. During one commencement address, Jack surprised Jo Ann by altering his speech to speak of the profound importance of finding a great life partner. Jo Ann stood and took a bow—an authentic reflection of the values she lived by and the loving partnership she shared.

Jo Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Josie and Homer Hoyt; her siblings, Gayle, Onis, and Evyonne; her husband, Jack; and her son, Dan. She is survived by her son Pete, grandchildren Sam and Josie, her great-grandchildren, and many extended family members with whom she remained very close.
