Jimmie Lou Winfrey

December 15, 1935 March 6, 2026

Portales, NM

Jimmie Lou Winfrey, 90, of Portales, New Mexico, passed away on March 6, 2026. Born on December 15, 1935, in Elida to Cordelia Myrtie (Rogers) and James Montgomery Chilton, she lived a life marked by quiet strength, faithfulness, and devotion to her family and community.

In 1952, she married James Manasco. While he served in Korea, she moved to Oklahoma to help care for her brother’s children and completed high school there. After his return, they settled in the Clovis and Portales area, later spending a brief time in Amarillo while he trained as a barber. They eventually returned to Clovis, where he opened a barber shop. In the mid-1970s, they established Manasco Construction, and Jimmie Lou served as the company’s secretary while also driving a school bus. After Mr. Manasco’s death in 1990, she closed the business and went on to work as a secretary for Clovis Public Schools and later as a teacher’s aide in the Portales schools, retiring in the early 2000s.

She was married to Kenny Ashcraft in 1997, and to Sandy Winfrey in 2001; both preceded her in death. A longtime member of Prince Street Baptist Church, Jimmie Lou served faithfully as the church organist. She was also active in the PRMC Ladies’ Auxiliary. She found joy in her many crafts, particularly building birdhouses and crocheting afghans, and took great pride in tending her beautiful yard, flower garden, and fishpond. She also collected crosses.

Jimmie Lou is survived by her sons, James Manasco of Clovis and Jerald Manasco of Seguin, Texas; her daughters and son-in-law, Helen and Duke Younger of Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas, and Reba Dixon of Cheyenne, Wyoming; five grandchildren, Cole (Dawn) Younger, Sarah Dixon, Miles (Siobahn) Manasco, Kirk (Stephanie) Manasco, and James (Megan) Manasco; and twelve great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Ralph Chilton, and her three husbands.
