For they are us, our bodies are only wilted leaves on the tree of life. - Albert EinsteinJim Laws passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026 surrounded by his loving family at the age of 88.Jim lived a long and full life devoted to the things he loved most: Greta, his wife of 64 years; family; friends who became family and community. Born in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, Jim was son of David and Effie (Payzant) Laws. He proudly served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1958-1968. In 1962, Jim was stationed in Germany where he and Greta developed lifelong friendships. After being posted to CFB Chatham in 1966 and encountering the warm and welcoming community of Miramichi, they knew they had found their home and decided to establish roots. In 1968, Jim co-founded Miramichi Electronics which he owned and operated for 54 years. He later expanded the electronics repair business to include his other passion of hunting and fishing. Through his work, he became a familiar and trusted face to many in the community, often fixing things thought to be beyond repair.Jim will be remembered for his kindness, his strong work ethic and his dedication to his community through his work with the Newcastle Lions Club, St. Andrew's Anglian Church and the Atlantic Salmon Conservation efforts. As member of the Lions club for more than 50 years, he derived great pride and enjoyment from the work he did with the catering committee. He was also one of the founding members of the Lion's MVHS SafeGrad, organizing it for over thirty years. For Jim, it was the opportunity to work with the youth and the positive interactions he had with them, that drove him to continue to contribute to this important initiative well into his 80's. He committed many hours of his technical expertise to the church, assisting with recording the services for radio broadcast. For anyone who stopped to talk with him, they would know that Jim was deeply passionate about the Miramichi River and its salmon. As a relentless advocate for the protection and future of the Atlantic salmon, he devoted countless hours to supporting conservation efforts and promoting the fishery he loved. It is for this work that he was inducted into the Miramichi Atlantic Salmon Museum Hall of Fame in 2019.Above all else, Jim was a devoted family man. Together, Jim and Greta built a family and a home filled with warmth, laughter, lasting memories and love. Besides Greta, Jim leaves behind three children Darlene (Shelton) Sobey, Jim (Carrie) Laws and Patricia (Tom) Strapps; seven grandchildren: Andrea (Kyler), Lianne (Rob), Hannah, Jonathan, Sam, Matt and Megan; five great-grandchildren: Quinn, Eva, Olivia, Kallie and Kamden; three step grand-children: Jordan, Graham and Emilie; and three sisters: Betsy, Joanie and his "special" twin, Jo. He was predeceased by his parents and three brothers: David, Bill and Jack. His family brought him great pride and joy.The family would like to express sincere gratitude to the staff of Mount Saint Joseph's Nursing Home, who provided exceptional care and compassion in the final year of his life.The family will welcome visitors on Friday, March 13th, from 4 pm – 8 pm, at Northumberland Funeral Home.Funeral service will be on Saturday, March 14th, at 2 pm, at St. Andrew's Anglican Church in Newcastle with Rev. Wilfred Langmaid officiating.
